As of March 15, 2020 Peru has been in lockdown. Citizens have been ordered to remain inside of their homes, Peruvian military and police forces have mobilized to enforce the act, arresting people in the streets without justifiable reason. The borders are closed, planes are grounded, even a current MUI volunteer is trapped in Peru. The current global situation is forcing Manos Unidas Peru to make some very difficult decisions.
In compliance with the Peruvian government’s directive Manos Unidas Peru closed the school and all programs on March 10, four days into the 2020 school year. A re- open date is uncertain at this time. As far as we know, our families and staff remain healthy.
The current situation is causing a devastating impact on the tourist industry of Cusco where approximately 4 million people visit each year. This economic downfall could crush Manos Unidas Peru.
Many MUP families depend heavily on tourism for their livelihood and are facing severe economic hardship. Affordable student tuition revenue for MUP could dissolve this year and we need to act fast!
These are serious times and the survival for MUP’s school, café and related programs that all of our children and families depend on is in jeopardy.
We are currently evaluating a temporary closure of Manos Unidas Café, the most interactive and impactful program, due to the crumbling tourist industry.
